Policy Statement

At Don Bosco College, we are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible environment for all individuals, including those with different abilities. This policy outlines our dedication to providing necessary facilities and support for differently-abled persons to ensure their full participation in academic and campus life. We also provide a scholarship for differently-abled persons to meet their financial needs.

Objectives

  • To ensure the accessibility of infrastructure and facilities for differently-abled persons within the college premises.
  • To provide necessary support and accommodations for differently-abled students to enhance their academic experience.
  • To raise awareness and promote a culture of inclusivity and respect for individuals with different abilities within the college community.

Guidelines

Accessibility Infrastructure:

  • Ramps and specially designed spaces within classrooms and common areas shall be maintained to facilitate easy access for differently-abled individuals.
  • Regular inspections and maintenance are conducted to ensure the functionality and safety of accessibility infrastructure.

Wheelchair Accessibility:

  • Wheelchair is made available on campus, and assistance is provided to ensure the independent mobility of differently-abled individuals.
  • Designated person is responsible for coordinating wheelchair accessibility and addressing related concerns.

Screen Reader Software:

  • Don Bosco College continues to provide and update screen reader software programs to assist blind and low-vision individuals in accessing computer screens.
  • IT support staff is trained to assist users in configuring and utilizing screen reader software effectively.

Examination Support:

  • The college provides scribes and makes exam arrangements for differently-abled students to ensure fair and accommodating assessment conditions.
  • Examination committees collaborate with disability support services to implement necessary accommodations and support measures.

Accessible Learning Materials:

  • Faculty members are encouraged to create and provide learning materials in accessible formats, following established accessibility standards.
  • The college library will maintain a collection of accessible materials and collaborate with publishers to acquire accessible versions of textbooks and resources.

Awareness and Sensitization:

  • Regular awareness programs, workshops, and training sessions are organized to educate the college community about the needs and challenges of differently-abled individuals.
  • Sensitization efforts will focus on fostering understanding, empathy, and inclusivity among students, faculty, and staff.

Roles and Responsibilities

College Administration:

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to support differently-abled persons.
  • Allocate resources for accessibility infrastructure, support services, and awareness programs.

Disability Support Services:

  • Coordinate accommodations and support services for differently-abled students.
  • Facilitate communication between students, faculty, and relevant departments regarding disability-related needs.

Faculty Members:

  • Create accessible learning materials and incorporate inclusive teaching practices.
  • Collaborate with disability support services to implement accommodations for differently-abled students.

IT Support Staff:

  • Provide technical assistance and support for screen reader software and other assistive technologies.
  • Ensure the compatibility and functionality of accessibility features across digital platforms.

Student Body:

  • Foster a culture of inclusivity and support for differently-abled peers.
  • Participate in awareness programs and initiatives to promote understanding and acceptance.

Procedure

  • Differently-abled students seeking accommodations or support services should contact the Disability Support Services office to initiate the accommodation process.
  • Disability Support Services will assess the individual needs of each student and collaborate with relevant departments to implement appropriate accommodations.
  • Faculty members will be notified of approved accommodations and provided with guidance on how to facilitate the accommodation process within their courses.
  • Regular evaluations and feedback mechanisms will be established to monitor the effectiveness of accommodations and identify areas for improvement.
  • Any concerns or issues related to disability accommodations or accessibility infrastructure should be reported to the appropriate college authorities for prompt resolution.
